During the 2021 NBA draft, The Chicago Bulls selected Ayo Dosunmu 38th overall. Dosunmu was a star at Illinois but what does he bring to the Bulls this season?
What did it take to get Ayo Dosunmu?
It took nothing. No trade up. The Bulls didn’t have to give up any additional assets to acquire Ayo. This may come to a shock to many people as Ayo was projected to be a first round pick but fell into the Bulls hand at pick 38. I guess you could say Arturas Karnisovas worked some of his magic.
What does Ayo Dosunmu bring to the Chicago Bulls?
Ayo Dosunmu entered the draft after this junior season at Illinois. During his junior season, Illinois was the Big Ten Champion, as well as a one seed during March Madness. Ayo has been a proven winner as well as a leader during his time with Illinois. This could bring a lot to the Bulls. Ayo is a 6’5 combo guard with the abilities to create his own shot, as well as create for others. Dosunmu is a great player when it comes to screens and pick and rolls. He has the ability to read the defender and make the right play. Dosunmu has always had the ball in his hand at the end of games and has proven to have the clutch gene that many players don’t possess. He has the ability to be a great on ball defender with his great lateral quickness.

Well, there has to be at least a couple reasons why he fell to the Bulls at 38. He’s not exactly what you would call a true point guard. Yes, he has to skillset and potential to become one but right now he hasn’t shown it. His 3 point shot isn’t something he can rely on. Ayo is good at just about everything when it comes to basketball, but what is he great at? What makes him special or different than everyone else?
An Overview
Ayo Dosunmu was a steal at pick 38, but he’s not the point guard the Bulls have been searching for. He’s going to be a really nice spark plug off the bench who has the ability to take the game over at times. If he really puts the work in he has the capability of being an amazing player for a long time in this league. It’ll be exciting to watch him play in this upcoming season, and watch him grow in the league.
Even without a first round pick this year, you could say the Bulls did a solid job drafting again this year. Dosunmu wasn’t projected to fall this far into the draft, but was fortunate enough to fall to his hometown team. Many believed that the Bulls were in a position to trade up for Dosunmu(or other prospects), but they didn’t have to give up any assets to acquire him.
